Saltaire

Founded at the turn of the 19th century, Saltaire has become one of the most sought after communities on Fire Island. The first thing that one notices upon arriving, after traversing the Great South Bay aboard the ferry, is the stately row of traditional shingle style homes bathed in glorious sunshine along the bayfront, lovingly called “Coffey Houses” by residents. One then notices the spacious boardwalks occupied by barefoot children cycling with out a care in the world.

Saltaire is truly a magical place. Lose oneself in the quiet landscape of blueberries, maples, hollies and pitch pines while admiring the contrasting mix of contemporary and traditional homes hidden behind this wooded landscape. Stroll to the beach and gasp at the broad expanse of white sand that is free of crowds. Enjoy being mesmerized by the repeated pounding of waves as the Atlantic Ocean meets this sensational island which is devoid of automobiles.

Afterwards, relax in the shade of the gazebo with a cup of coffee and a snack from the market. Watch village residents walking and bicycling chatting to one another as children go by with bamboo fishing poles on a mission to catch snappers off the dock.

Life in Saltaire consists of sailing on the bay, kayaking to West and East Island, clamming or crabbing in the Cove, swimming in the cool waves of the Atlantic Ocean under the protection of the lifeguards, playing tennis at the yacht club and softball at the ball field.

Evenings are spent amongst friends, cocktails on the deck, dinner at the yacht club, or simply watching the sun set behind the Fire Island Lighthouse.
